My Review

FINALLY – a movie for adults. No monsters, no aliens, no death rays – just humans having difficult, honest interactions. How refreshing. Excellent movie. Paul Giamatti really is one of our generation’s better actors. Here he plays a teacher at an elite Prep high school for the Ivy Leagues. His nickname is Walleye because he has a bad eye. I’m not sure why the Director had his bad eye changing sides from scene to scene. Looks like a mistake to me, but I’m sure the Director will quote some artsy-fartsy reason.

The young male lead (and a few others) can’t go home for Christmas and forced to stay at the school. All the other boys eventually go skiing with family of another boy, leaving Paul and the young man (Dominic Sessa) making the best of a bad situation.

Dominic reminds me of a young Jack Nicholson. He thinks with his eyes. I wish he had been nominated for Best Supporting. Carrie Preston (Claws) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Only Murders in the Building) have good supporting roles. I watched it at home on Hulu. It may be still in the theatres? Highly recommend. It looks like Hollywood is finally coming to its senses and giving us movies with real humans again. Thank you, Jesus.

How I Viewed It

Digital Streaming. I hooked my laptop into my 55″ flat screen TV via HDMI cable. I REALLY wanted to see this on the big screen – and the big audio speakers!…

Thank You

Thank you to Mr Element Pictures and Mr Searchlight Pictures for giving me access to watch The Holdovers via Digital Streaming so I could make an intelligent and informed opinion when casting my vote for the 30th Annual SAG Awards.

However, a big, sprawling movie like this REALLY should be seen on the Big Screen in a community setting. I wish you had a Screening for me or (at the very least) offered Movie Cash.
