Pre-Med Training

Featured Image Pre-Med Training

My Pre-Med training included college-level Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics & Physics while still in high school, thru the Advanced Placement (AP) program. I understand and can make sense of all that highly technical and scientific text.

My most impressive research was on how aspirin affects the coagulation (clotting) time of human blood for my Senior AP Science Project.

Pre-Med Scholarship to University of Louisville

I won the Biochemistry category at the State level. Due to these accomplishments, I represented Grant County High School in the first (1983) Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program and was granted a full academic Pre-Med scholarship to the University of Louisville.

Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program

The Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program (KY GSP) was a milestone in my life. This was one of the best experiences of my life! For the first time, I was around people that were as driven and motivated to do something with their life as I was.

KY GSP was created in 1983 to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders. The program provides academic and personal growth through the balance of a strong liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life experience.

All through high school, I believed I was going to become a medical doctor, probably specializing in Emergency Room medicine. I am good in emergencies – at focusing on what has got to be done, regardless of all the chaos going on around me.

I always pushed myself hard in high school. I knew once I got out in the real world, I would have to compete against all these people who had grown up in the City – with all the advantages that come from that.

There was no formal instruction in the Arts where I grew up, but I did have an aptitude for science and math. My high school did have a great science program and I excelled in it.

I graduated 3rd in my high school. The classes were not weighted, so Home Economics counted the same as Calculus.

Veterinarian

My Father (Funeral Home Director) taught me to respect nature and all animals. The training for medical doctors and morticians is very similar.

When I was growing up, I thought I would become a Veterinarian. I have always been very good with animals. I was raised with Black Labradors and Dachshunds. Very strange combination, but not a mean bone in their body.

I’ve just always been good with animals. I understand them and they understand me. I’ve learned to trust them. If they don’t like you, I probably won’t either. I strive to become the man my dog thinks I am.

In high school, I changed my mind to become a people doctor instead.

First Aid/CPR

I became certified in First Aid thru the American Red Cross.
