How viewed: DVD played on my 55″ flat screen. After all the hype, I REALLY wish you would have given me access to see it on the Big Screen – like a screening for me or offer a Movie Cash coupon.

Synopsis: A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles.

My Review: After all the hype, I was really underwhelmed with this movie. I liked it, but I didn’t LOVE it – and this is coming from a lover of musical theatre. I kept thinking how much better this would have been with real musical theatre/trained singer/dancers in the lead roles. I love Emma Stone (she is my future ex-wife), but this was not up to her usual standards, eg: THE HELP. Ryan Gosling is an okay actor, but not a real singer/dancer. Yes, he was in the Mickey Mouse Club as a child. Yes, he learned to play the piano (and he did it very well), but I kept thinking how many others I have worked with that could have played this role so much better. Kudos to the choreographer, especially shutting down an LA freeway for the big opening number. However, how can they call this a musical when only repeating the same 3 songs, over and over and over – ad nauseam? I think of this as more of a movie with music, but not in the same category as say, CHICAGO or DREAMGIRLS. I do want more musicals in the future and I hope this movie helps with that resurgence – with REAL/TRAINED actor/singer/dancers, like from Broadway. I know the Producers were banking on the Stars’ power to get butts in the seats, but its not like we don’t have the talent. And available, willing to work for less than what the Stars were paid. And I HATED the ending.

Would you like to see it on the Big Screen?

Thank you Mr Black Label Media and Mr Lionsgate for giving me access to this movie so I could make an intelligent and informed opinion when casting my vote on the 23rd Annual SAG Awards. A big, sprawling, visually appealing movie like this should really be seen on the big screen. I wish you had a screening for me or offer a Movie Cash coupon.

What did you think of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in LA LA LAND as Nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Leading Role, and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for the SAG Awards 2017? Please comment below.
One more thing – a big, splashy, beautiful movie like this should REALLY be seen on the Big Screen. I wish you would have had a screening for me or offer a Movie Cash coupon.

  1. I see that the dance scenes were really homages to prior classic musicals. I found it refreshing that these two leads were NOT dancers. It made it a bit “realer” for me. Not a slick dance number.
My problem was, that with the cutesy-pie production design, the whole thing had a lightweight feel to it. Maybe that was intentional. And, sorry, I loved that last look Ryan gives Emma…like it hurts to see you go on without me but it’s ok and I see that we were only meant to be together for a while ( it was good!)-while we transitioned to this place now.

    1. Hi Jojo. Thanx for your feedback. I kind of can see about how using non-traditional singer/dancers made it feel more “real”. I don’t want to comment on ending in detail, in case readers haven’t seen the feature yet. I guess I wanted a more traditional/romantic/Hwood ending.
